CHAPTER 23

CONNOR

Brothers don’t mess around with each other’s sisters.

Well, it’s a little fucking late for that now.

I didn’t care. I left home and went to her, and I didn’t care about the consequences. I didn’t care about loyalty or brotherhood. I just needed someone to confide in. She was the natural choice.

Ignoring the guilt in my gut, I enter my house and close the front door behind me as silently as possible. It’s late, but that doesn’t mean the Morgans are asleep. It’s never uncommon in this house to hear my mother’s voice in the den at three in the morning as she paces back and forth running lines.

And when I was a small, my father used to stay up in front of the television watching football games until the morning hours, too jet-lagged to sleep. Less common nowadays for that, but I still remember all those nights I’d sneak downstairs and curl up beside him until I fell asleep and he’d carry me back to bed. My father. The great Junior Morgan.

Feels like a lifetime ago now.

Fortunately, all seems quiet on the path upstairs to my room.

Unfortunately, I have to pass by my parents’ room to get to it.

The door is slightly ajar. A dim light shines from within, most likely from the lamps on their bedside tables. I make out their voices as I draw closer, words slowly taking shape. I don’t plan on eavesdropping, but then again, I didn’t plan on fooling around with Dana Kirby tonight, either.

Connor, I’m ready.

I tighten every muscle, holding on to that memory as if it were as precious as she is.

“You know,” I hear my mother say, “for a man so determined not to become my father, you sure act like him sometimes.”

“Ally...” My father sighs. She struck a nerve with that one. "Thank you. I needed that.”

“You’re welcome.”

After a few quiet moments, he continues, “I don’t know what to do.”

“You already know what you’re going to do, Junior. Question is, are you going to do it alone?”

My phone goes off in my pocket. The notification tone cuts loudly through the silence and I curse under my breath. My cover now blown, I pass their doorway, hoping I can reach my room before someone catches up with me.

“Hey, buddy.”

Not fast enough.

“Hey,” I say, plowing forward, ignoring him.

“Everything all right?”

“Yeah.”

“You okay? Something happen?”

“No.”

I close the door behind me. Dana may have talked me off that ledge, but that doesn’t mean I want to talk to him.

I check my phone. There’s a new text message.

It’s from Dana.

A quiet knock at my door.

Frustrated, I spin around. “Dad, I said I—” Opening the door, I pause and pull back to let her in. “Oh. Sorry, Mom.”

She raises a brow, but doesn’t seem at all angry about it as she steps into the room, her baggy sleepwear hanging off her body. “Are you having a good night?” she asks, her voice playful.

“Yeah,” I say, lingering by my desk. “Just great.”

She plants her back against my closed door.
